This image is a prime example of how celebrities are marketed. This is just a portrait, and so is your headshot. You are a Leading Lady or Person, and you need to show that to the world. You need to market that properly and your wardrobe matters. Films have wardrobe departments for this exact reason. The clothing your character wears helps sell the character. If you were doing a Victorian Period piece and wardrobe handed you a plain t-shirt red flags would be raised. Same goes for your headshots. Present to casting and the world that you are indeed worthy of being an A-list Actor. Have them immediately perceive you, upon seeing your headshots, as someone who could be on the cover of a Magazine, or Poster. It is really that simple. The clothing doesn’t have to be expensive, it doesn’t have to be some high end brand name, but it does need to complement.

Wardrobe is an important aspect of your headshot session, and it’s a question I get asked about constantly, “What do I wear for my session”? Now your Management or Agent might tell you to wear something simple, like a plan t-shirt. I am telling you not to do that. Actually, I am begging you not to do that. I have been a Headshot Photographer and Fashion Photographer for years, and the most important thing I have taken away from both is that the clothes matter. So what should you wear? Something stylish, something that screams fashion, something you would wear on a date, something that makes you look and feel stunning. It is what I call the “Dress Up” theory. When you dress up for something, whether it be a date, special event, wedding, or just a night out on the town with your friends the compliments flow in. When you dress down or wear a t-shirt people rarely say “Wow! You look amazing!” Don’t feel bad, no one is getting complimented, but when you dress up that is another story. Headshots are marketing and advertising plain and simple. You are your brand, and you are selling your brand. You need to think about how Agencies, Magazines, and Publicists market A-List Celebrities, because you want to be an A-list celebrity, and you CAN BE! Google search Celebrities you admire, or want a similar career to, and take in how they are dressed for their portrait shoots. For example, Googling “Charlize Theron Magazine” yields this image below;
